The Hangover(s): UFC Fight Night 48 & 49 Edition

We were treated to #2Fights1Night as the UFC put it on social media. Except it really wasn’t 2 fights, 1 night. It was like 2 fights, 1 day. 1 long day. If you’re the person ho got up super early to watch the fights from China, I commend you. You’re a strong person. A stupid person, but still strong. Why are you stupid? Just sleep in to a normal time, fire up fight pass. The fights will be there and you’re still well rested.

Any-who, if you happened to miss any of the fights yesterday. I’ve got you covered. If you didn’t and just want to take a trip down memory lane, that’s fine too.

I guess it’s time for me to start drinking this Dos Anjos Kool-Aid.

Remember when this guy was losing fights to Gleison Tibau & Clay Guida? Now he’s knocking off Donald Cerrone and last night Benson Henderson and throwing himself in with the top dogs at 155. Not sure exactly where you go with him next, but we’ll worry about that later.

But man, poor Bendo. He’s gotta be out of the contender picture for awhile eh? I assume he’ll hang around the top 10 but I’m also not sure who’d you throw him in there with.

Mein vs. Pyle

Jordan Mein almost knocked the mullet off of Mike Pyle’s head last night. Mein’s been fighting since he was like 9 years old apparently so he’s definitely got upside, I’ll be interested to see where he goes from here.

Carmont vs. Leites

Leites may be balding really weirdly, but he’s got 7 wins in a row after starching Francis Carmont last night. Speaking of Carmont, after winning his first 6 UFC fights, he’s lost 3 in a row. Not good.

Cassius? Really?

When Max Holloway was punching Clay Collard in the face repeatedly, I thought he was going to need a surgical 2×4 in order to get the job done. He didn’t. His fists did the trick.

However, I wish someone would take a surgical 2×4 to Collard’s nickname. “Cassius” seriously bruh? That had to have been a joke that Clay just didn’t get. How about we go with Clay Collard “Greens.” That’s kinda funny.

Lazaro vs. Vick

This fight was a human version of people mashing buttons in fighting games. That’s the only way to describe it, that’s the only way I know how to describe it. Oh, Vick won.

Odds & Ends about UFN 49

• Neil Magny now has 4 wins in 2014. It’s August. That’s wild.

• Ben Saunders finished the first omoplata in UFC history last night. That’s so wild.

Now let’s take it to China. There was some MMA that went on here. It wasn’t pretty, but it was MMA. We know that China has a little while to develop still, and that’s okay.

Bisping turns Le’s face into ground beef.

Let’s call it what it is, a great bounce back by Michael Bisping. Does this vault him into the top of the middleweight rankings? Nah. Only reason he gets Luke Rockhold is because there’s some heat there. Heat sells and I ‘d definitely watch the fight. I just feel that we’ve seen this with Bisping before. I’ve heard C.B. Dollaway mentioned as a fight for Bisping. I like that one more. Should Cung Le fight again? It’s not like he needs to.

Woodley teaches Kim about throwing spinning shit.

Simply put, Woodley did a good job of re-starting his run to the title. Very good quick showing by Woodley. Now Kim should’ve known not to be so reckless against a guy like Tyron. Sure the style is a bit more exciting to watch but that catches up to you sooner or later.

Elizabeth Phillips is probably out of a job.

So Phillips lost a controversial decision and went on a serious Facebook rant. Including saying something along the lines of “I hate the UFC” WELP. She’s lost her 2 UFC fights, I get the frustration but there are better ways to go about it.

UFC Macau Odds & Ends:

• Yuta Saski’s rear-naked choke of Roland Delorme was hella slick and all kinds of fun that you should definitely go out of your way to watch or re-watch.

• Dana White actually told a judge to go home 2 fights into the night, just to let you know the kind of stuff we were dealing with here.

• There were a handful of other fights on this card but I was told that if I had nothing nice to say, then I shouldn’t say it at all.
