Chael Sonnen is questioning whether Michael Chandler vs. Conor McGregor will ever happen.
One of the biggest fights of the year is the scheduled bout between former champion Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler. When this fight was first announced fans were very excited for two reasons. First, it meant that McGregor would be returning to the UFC after a very long layoff. Secondly, the pair were slated to coach this season of The Ultimate Fighter which would surely bring the drama leading up to this fight. Filming has concluded on The Ultimate Fighter and there is still no date set for this matchup.

There are still a few lingering questions and logistics that must be addressed before this fight can be made. McGregor‘s long absence from the UFC led to him removing himself from the USADA testing pool. He must return to the testing pool and test clean from any banned substances for six months before he can return to the cage. There has been no update on whether or not he has returned to the testing pool or if he has been tested.  Now his most recent antics have fans questioning whether he will at all.

Chael Sonnen thinks Michael Chandler could be waiting on a bout that will never happen

It is no secret that McGregor is the biggest star in the UFC. A fight against him is a money-making fight for any fighter. Chandler knows this as well, it is part of the reason why he chose to take on this fight. Chandler has found a mix of success and failure since coming to the UFC. He is looking for a title shot but is instead waiting on this promised fight with McGregor because of the money and the clout that comes along with it. Chael Sonnen, the former fighter turned analyst believes he may be waiting a long time.

“We know nothing. We know that there’s no match, there’s no against Chandler, there’s no 155 pounds or 170 pounds,” he said on YouTube. “There’s no training camp at Big Bear, there in the middle of right now. Nothing that we’ve been told is accurate… Nothing else that we were told is true and turned out to be. These really aren’t our questions. He doesn’t need to fight, we’d like him to but it does affect an opponent who hasn’t done anything wrong.”

Sonnen used the example of McGregor playing some sort of game in Las Vegas as to the lack of urgency he has to return to the Octagon. McGregor is very rich and has plenty of business opportunities outside the cage, Chandler does fairly well in this realm himself but is still looking to fight at this time. Sonnen believes there could be a chance that McGregor never returns, or returns to fight somebody else instead

“At some point Chandler is gonna wake up and realize I don’t have a fight coming up with Conor, which means I don’t have a fight coming up at all. I’m a prizefighter I got a family, it’s gonna be one of those situations at some point,” he said. “But what does happen? Seems like a really good idea to me, seems like a really good match to me. What else would you like to see Chandler do and do you believe that Conor will come back but against somebody else? I mean, that’s where it gets tough. I mean, that’s where you do start to speculate. Well, maybe he’s not coming back.”

The Ultimate Fighter will begin airing next month and the original plan was for these two to fight each other in September. As that date creeps closer it doesn’t seem as if things are moving progressively closer to that. Both fighters seem convinced that each other is their next opponent, at least they have not let on if that is not the case.
