Sean O’Malley Comments On Cageside Joint And The Reebok Sponsorship Deal

Rising UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley paid homage to the Nate Diaz when the cameras cut to him during the FOX broadcast for UFC on FOX 29 on (Sat., April 14, 2018) from Glendale, Arizona. As soon as O’Malley was shown, he pulled out a joint and pretended to light it.

To remind you, when Nate Diaz pulled out a joint at UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Medeiros, back in February. The camera panned to Stockon native in the crowd. He was only on screen for five seconds, but man did he make the most of his time.

O’Malley trains out of the MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona. UFC women’s flyweight contender and MMA lab teammates Mackenzie Dern, who was sitting next to O’Malley, seemed to really enjoy the antics.

UFC’s PR team informed him that he was about to be on camera, he got out a joint of his own and mimed lighting it. During his interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour O’Malley spoke of the UFC’s reaction to his joint-lighting mime:

“Eventually they come up to us and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to shoot you guys here in a little bit, we’ll let you know’. I was like, ‘this is perfect timing.’”

“I kept smiling at [UFC official] Heidi [Dean] who had just told us that we’re going to get on camera because I knew that she wasn’t going to be happy with me, but she wasn’t too mad. She was the one who said, ‘Okay, you guys are going to be on camera in 3,2,1,’ and I kept smiling at her but she didn’t know why, but I think she did then,” he explained.

It’s not too surprising the UFC didn’t react to O’Malley about the incident. After all, they stand to gain as well the more popular the 23-year-old fighter gets.

O’Malley also announced on recent episode of the MMAHour, he is about to ink a deal with UFC’s apparel partner Reebok, and which will release special T-shirts featuring the fighter. The shirt will go on sale April 20th, of course. (Quote Via MMAMania)

“Actually, my manger hooked it up. I am going to sign a two-year deal with Reebok, so I am excited about that. These shirts will go on sale on 4/20 at UFC.com and MMAWarehouse.com. Reebok didn’t make enough shirts to stock their one Reebok.com store.”

O’Malley last fought at UFC 222, where he scores a unanimous decision victory over Andre Soukhamthath back in March. With the win, his record remains perfect 10-0, but he suffered a severe ankle injury, including ligament damage.
