Nate Marquardt is getting backlash for homophobic comments he made on Saturday night.

Most MMA fans know Marquardt for his long tenure in the UFC. For newer fans, ‘The Great’ will now be known for his hateful opinions on homosexuality. While watching UFC Vegas 69, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion expressed his displeasure with a commercial shown by saying this on Twitter:

“Wow disgusting commercial watching @ESPNPlus with my kids and have to tell them to look away so they don’t see two men kissing! @ufc @espn #barf #disgusting”

Marquardt later claimed his comments weren’t hateful because of his religious beliefs. He had this to say:

“It is not hateful to say that homosexuality, pedophilia, or fornication is disgusting. It’s not loving to be silent when the culture praises things that lead people to Hell (1Cor 6:9-11). It’s not hateful, but loving to protect children from this world’s evil demented propaganda”

The former UFC fighter continued to defend his controversial opinion with several other tweets. Everybody has a right to have their own opinion, but Marquardt’s comments are disappointing for most fans that supported him as a fighter.

Fans react to the homophobic comments made by Nate Marquardt

It didn’t take long for Nate Marquardt’s homophobic comments to make the rounds on social media. Fans weren’t happy with what Marquardt had to say. ‘The Great’ quickly had his Twitter comments filled with backlash, including some saying:

“This is really disappointing from Nate, I was a big fan.  I disagree it has anything to do with being white though.”

“To each their own but I can’t imagine the conversation you’ll have to have when you see their search history once they hit mid-teens. trying to shelter your kids this much will only drive them to look harder. Good luck with all that man. ”

“Damn, guessing you didn’t realize how homophobic this would come off…”

“As a human being you’re entitled to have your opinions on the world I just sincerely hope your kids are able to educate themselves away from their fathers hateful view on the world”

After retiring from MMA in 2017, Marquardt returned to fighting in 2021. The 43-year-old won his return bout in Titan FC and then lost his second bout with XMMA.  If ‘The Great’ chooses to fight again, he will surely have more haters than ever before.
