Molly McCann plans to change divisions after her disappointing performance at UFC London.

On July 22, ‘Meatball’ had her fighting career turned upside down when she suffered a first-round submission loss against Julija Stoliarenko. McCann’s second consecutive first-round loss warranted a significant change in her career, which was announced by the Liverpool native on Instagram.

After taking the weekend to process the loss, McCann shared a reaction post on Instagram regarding her recent performance. In the extended message, ‘Meatball’ had this to say about moving from the flyweight division to strawweight:

“We have one more adjustment to make and I believe that will make all the difference in the world, the smallest in the division makes it tough when the opponents are so much bigger. So for me it’s time to drop down and face the girls who are the same size!”

McCann’s move down to strawweight will be a drastic change she hasn’t done in her nineteen-fight professional MMA career. Since making her UFC debut in May 2018, ‘Meatball’ has been a mainstay in the flyweight division, leading to a 6-5 promotional record.

Molly McCann calls out ‘Keyboard Warriors’ by reflecting on her success

Molly McCann was one of the most talked about female fighters in the first half of 2022. Between March and July, The Liverpool native secured highlight-reel knockouts against Luana Carolina and Hannah Goldy, making her a potential future title contender.

Unfortunately for McCann, her momentum was ruined by a first-round submission loss against Erin Blanchfield. Since then, she’s received backlash from fans who believe Blanchfield “exposed” her.

During the same extended Instagram message, McCann had this to say to those who have doubted her on social media:

“To all the keyboard warriors who’ll give me down the banks and want to tell me about my self go ahead, I’m living my dream EVERY SINGLE DAY, I’m winning in life, the best teams around me, the best promotion in the world. This game has give me everything, and I am beyond blessed. I’ll be back sooner rather than later, thank you to everyone for their support.”

McCann has the potential to solidify herself as a contender in the strawweight division. Assuming she can safely cut down to 115 pounds, ‘Meatball’ could prove that her power can be a problem for anyone in the strawweight division. Only time will tell if the 33-year-old can silence the doubters and become an elite fighter in her new weight class.
