- Michael Chandler is confident a fight with Conor McGregor is the biggest match in the sport right now
- The biggest UFC PPV event thus far is UFC 274
After becoming the owner of one of the most brutal KO wins in the UFC in recent times, Michael Chandler has been eyeing another massive fight. “Iron” admitted that he wants the title shot but he wouldn’t pass up on the opportunity to face Conor McGregor.
Chandler previously assured fans that a fight with McGregor wouldn’t be boring and now, he is confident that it would be the biggest fight there is.
There will be fireworks
In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Chandler said that he’s saying it “as humble as possible” but a fight with “The Notorious” is the biggest fight in all MMA at the moment given the undeniable demand from the fans.
“If Conor’s coming back anytime soon, I think me and Conor would make some fireworks and it’s a fight that fans want to see,” he claimed. “I think it’s the biggest fight we can make in mixed martial arts right now and I try to say that as humble as possible but I think it’s a huge fight.”
It’s a huge claim
While it is true that every McGregor fight is a sell-out, let’s delve into what numbers say. So far, the highest-grossing UFC ppv event is UFC 274 which reportedly sold over 400,000 buys on ESPN+. Chandler sure is a big name in the UFC, having been a top-five fighter in the lightweight division. However, it’s still too early to assume anything.
As things stand, McGregor hasn’t tasted a victory since 2020 and has now dropped to No. 12 in the official UFC rankings. Chandler, meanwhile, is at No. 5 but has lost to the top guys in the division- Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira.
It’s hard to tell if the UFC will book Chandler against McGregor in his return as the former two-division king has a desire to fight for the welterweight title. One thing certain is that McGregor has been preparing for his long-awaited comeback.
