Mark Munoz pulls out the win against Demian Maia

“Where’s your Jiu Jitsu now playboy?” Those famous words spewed from Anderson Silva’s mouth to the ears and brain of Demian Maia will forever be revered by me as some of the best smack talk ever. I repeat the phrase often and in out of context situations. For example, when a waiter (or waitress, I’m fair) drops dishes at a restaurant and everyone applauds at their fumble, I say “where’s your Jiu Jitsu now playboy?” then take a huge bite of pancakes. It works for everything, even Halo trash talk or road rage.

We didn’t see any of Demian Maia’s playboy BJJ for almost two full rounds as the world class practitioner stood and exchanged major blows with Mark Munoz for the better part of the fight. The wrestler from Oklahoma didn’t seem to mind, he obliged Maia and threw out his elite wrestling for a more stand up oriented affair, as bad as that was going for him for the first 5 minutes. Maia gets the best of Munoz in the first (although there was major backlash at a 30-27 in favor of Munoz from a judge) leaving Mark dazed and backpedaling with striking we have never before seen from Maia.

The subsequent rounds offer more grappling leading to a few intense scrambles that would make DSTRYRsg proud and rewinding his DVR, including a near Demian Maia crucifix.

It was a close fight. A great fight, but real close. Munoz is our boy, but their is evidence of a rogue judge in Vancouver right now, 30-27? 29-28 all the way. The decision aside, the real question now is where does this win put him? Munoz vs Stann for the right to fight his teammate Anderson Silva?
