Leon Edwards thinks Conor McGregor is good for MMA because he gave the sport more than he took from it.
McGregor is the biggest star MMA has ever seen as he’s crossed over into the mainstream, and could have walked away from the sport a long time ago. However, the Irishman is a fighter at heart and continues to compete in the UFC, which only brings more eyes to the sport, which Leon Edwards says is a good thing.
“For me, I think he’s great for the sport. He has definitely brought the sport forward to the casual fans. He is one of those guys that you either like him or you don’t like him, but he is who he is. What he’s achieved in the sport, you can’t take away from him. He did become the first-ever two-division world champion. So even though he talks all that s**t, he is actually a good fighter, as well, behind it. For the spot, he definitely helped the sport. He didn’t take nothing away from it. He definitely gave more in terms of pushing it into the mainstream,” Edwards said on Up Front with Simon Jordan.
Leon Edwards doesn’t care what Conor McGregor does in his personal life
Although Leon Edwards thinks Conor McGregor is good for MMA, others don’t feel the same because of what he does in his personal life.
McGregor has been in trouble with the law for assault, but Edwards says what the Irishman does in his personal life doesn’t impact what he has done for the sport of MMA.
“I’m not an admirer of his. I’m judging him from the competitive part of it, the self-promotion part of it. His personal life is his own business. I’m sure there are other people in boxing or in football that are doing weird s**t. For me, I couldn’t give two s***s about his personal life. It’s more about what he’s achieved in the game, his self-promotion part of it. To each their own. He’s not my mate, so it is what it is,” Edwards said.
As of right now, McGregor does not have his return fight booked, but he claims he’s set to return in June against Michael Chandler.
