Let me tell you about the time in college when I enrolled in a senior-level Korean class when I couldn’t even say ‘Hello’ in the language. The teacher never called on me until the sixth week of class. Instead of foolishly attempting to reply in Korean, I just pointed to my throat and coughed a few times. She gave me a snide look and never addressed me again. With the help of my Korean neighbor, I turned in my final exam — and failed miserably. I failed the class so brutally that my final grade should have come with a basket full of slaps to the face.
