It Would Be An Exciting Fight, But Is It Likely To Happen?

It would be an exciting match up to see top lightweight fighters Tony Ferguson (25-3) and Justin Gaethje (20-2) battle it out in the octagon. But, is it likely to happen anytime soon? Not really!

Ferguson holds the record for the most consecutive wins in UFC lightweight history, recently knocked out Donald Cerrone at UFC 238 on June 8th. So, he’ll be looking for a bigger fight without a doubt… like a title fight.

And whoever wins the Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier fight at UFC 242 on September 7th could see Ferguson next.

But Gaethje may get a shot somewhere down the road if all of the stars align in his favor. Coming off a knockout win against Edson Barboza, he’ll probably see some decent fights in the near future, but it’s uncertain as of now.

Ben Askren initiated the idea by Tweeting…

“On the podcast with FRB now, why hasn’t anyone tried to put Tony Ferguson against Justin Gaethje? That sounds fantastic”.

Justin Gaethje Tweeted back, and he was highly in favor of the idea…

“That sounds fucking fantastic. Take me to that dark place of yours @TonyFergusonXT”

The fight is possible at some point as we’ve seen a lot of really unexpected matchups but it’ll likely have to wait until Tony Ferguson gets his title shot. Ferguson has been so dominant since 2012, and no one deserves to face the winner of the Khabib/Poirier fight more than he does right now.
