Joe Rogan Defends Hollywood Actor Steven Seagal
Steven Seagal may be seen in the MMA world as being rather silly. However, if you ask Joe Rogan, there is a lot to respect about Seagal, too.
Seagal has been a Hollywood actor for several decades. He is a martial arts master, and has been in some classic action movies. Additionally, Seagal is a regular on the MMA scene.
Despite this, Seagal’s antics are a little bit crazy. For every real skill he has, he also has said some ridiculous things. Most notably, he is known for taking credit for teaching Silva the front kick he used on Vitor Belfort, among other situations.
Through all of this, UFC Commentator Joe Rogan knows that Seagal is legit. He spoke on his podcast, coming to the defense of the 67-year old.
“The thing is, Seagal was a legit aikido specialist. Like if it was just aikido. just because a guy seems kind of silly, you forget, he had a real, legit history with aikido. He as the first American to ever teach at a dojo in Japan. He speaks fluent Japanese and he is a legitimate aikido master. Like 100 percent, absolutely legitimate aikido master. The thing is aikido is just not something that translates perfectly to MMA.”
Rogan makes a good point about Aikido not translating well to MMA. However, he does note that aikido has it’s uses, and that Seagal is a master of that.
Aikido is just not the best martial art for self-defense. It’s just not. But it has its applications. And in its applications, he’s a master at it. Much like jiujitsu has its applications, but it’s not great for kickboxing, right? Taekwondo has its applications, but it doesn’t work if you kick the legs and punch the face.
But if you learn how to do it, those techniques can apply if you know all the other stuff. Well, if you know all the other stuff, this motherf—er has some real s–t. You would have to be so good at all the other stuff that you could utilize this.”
In Joe Rogan’s humble opinion, it seems that we should be putting some more respect on the name of Steven Seagal.
