‘Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power?’
Those are the lyrics of Tenacious D’s 2001 song, ‘Wonderboy’, as performed by famous actor and musician Jack Black. UFC welterweight fighter Stephen Thompson has been walking out to that song for quite some time now and it couldn’t fit more perfectly as ‘Wonderboy’ is also his nickname.
Jack Black To Join ‘Wonderboy’ In His Next Walk-Out
Thompson will make his 19th walk to the Octagon at UFC Orlando this weekend with the classic song, but this time will be different than all of the others. The UFC’s ‘Karate Kid’ will be chopping it up with no other than Black ahead of his fight with Kevin Holland.
“Speaking of ‘Wonderboy’, I got Jack Black going to walk me out,” Thompson said on ‘Won’t Back Down Radio‘. “He’s walking me out.
“He may lip sync or something, but I don’t think he’s gonna sing it. While he was there, he’s like ‘how cool would it be if I walked you out to Wonderboy as to your fight?’. He’s like ‘I probably won’t sing it because that takes rehearsals and stuff…’ No worries, I would be just happy if he was at the fight not even walking me out. The management took care of it from there, and made it happen.”
A Dream Turns Into A Reality
This is truly a dream come true for Thompson. The former UFC title challenger has been wanting to have Black at one of his fights since his kickboxing days.
It took a while but ‘W0nderboy’ first got into contact with the celebrity in 2021.
“After my last fight [with Gilbert Burns], [Black] had posted up on his Instagram story. He’s like, who is this guy?” Thompson told MMA Island. “He’s like, ‘I turn on the TV and some guy’s walking out to Wonderboy by Tenacious D’. He’s like, ‘I’m going for my man Wonderboy’.
“And I’m like, finally this guy has seen me fight and walk out to his song. I’ve always been a Tenacious D fan and a Jack Black fan. So he had contacted me on Instagram and we chatted back and forth, but that was about it. So one of my all time dreams, maybe fighting for the title or when I am the title holder, he’ll sing Tenacious D’s Wonderboy as I walk out live. That would be sick. That would be a dream right there.”
Stephen Thompson would go on to meet his hero Jack Black just last month as the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ actor practiced some kicks with him and also invited Thompson onstage in one of his concerts.
