Javier Mendez admits he will be paying close attention to the UFC 296 main event.

In the main event of the final pay-per-view card of the year, Leon Edwards is looking to defend his welterweight title for the second time against Colby Covington. It’s a very intriguing fight and one that Edwards is a slight betting favorite in to beat Covington.

According to Mendez, he says this is a close fight but one he’s rooting for Edwards to get the win.

“Of course, I want the biggest fights for my guys. I’m being biased. I’m being biased. But at the same time too, to be honest, I don’t root against the guys that I actually know and I know Leon. So even though I want that for Islam, I’m kind of pushing for Leon, because I do know Leon and I don’t want to go against him,” Mendez said on his YouTube channel.

Should Edwards win, Javier Mendez is hopeful that will be Islam Makhachev’s welterweight debut.

Mendez hopes Makhachev can fight Edwards

Islam Makhachev is the UFC lightweight champion and does not have his next fight booked. He will likely face either Justin Gaethje or Charles Oliveira next.

However, if Mendez had his way, he would like to see Makhachev move up to welterweight to face Edwards as he believes it’s a fight many fans would like to see.

“I am saying it would be great for Islam to go with Colby because there’s history already with Colby talking Dagestani wrestling versus American wrestling, so there’s history there. Leon and Islam, if it does come through, at some point, it’s two nice guys fighting each other, I mean, you know, that’s Alex and Islam 3, you know? I mean, two nice guys, the bad guys were Dan Hooker and the rest of the crew, but not Alex. Alex was a nice guy.” Mendez continued.

Whether or not Edwards has any interest in fighting Makhachev is uncertain.
