UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards believes Colby Covington’s resume should have an asterisk next to it.

Covington is next in line for a shot at Edwards’ 170-pound gold. Edwards vs. Covington will headline UFC 296. “Chaos” hasn’t fought since March 2022, but he has beaten the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Tyron Woodley, and Robbie Lawler. Despite the names, Edwards believes Covington’s record may have been padded because of the timing when he fought his opposition.

Leon Edwards Not Impressed With Colby Covington’s Accomplishments

Leon Edwards recently spoke to Rio Ferdinand for TNT Sports and he shared his belief that Colby Covington defeated most of his big-name opponents when they were already past their primes.

“Well, everyone is saying his cardio,” Edwards said. “Everyone is saying that he can put a pace and keep the pace for the full fight, but I believe that they’re judging it off fights where he was fighting over the hill guys like Robbie Lawler, [Jorge] Masvidal, Tyron Woodley. These guys were like 38, in sport it’s old. I’m excited to go out there and shut him up. He’s a big talker. So, I’m gonna go out there and shut him up and continue my reign.”

“Rocky” Gunning For UFC “Champ-Champ” Status

Edwards went on to remind fans that he continues to aim for becoming the first fighter from England to hold UFC gold in two weight classes simultaneously.

“A hundred percent,” Edwards said. “I feel like I walk around quite big anyway, and I always wanted to move up but I’m friends with Israel Adesanya, but now he’s taken a back step a little bit. Why not move up and try to be great? I’ve already achieved one of my goals, which is becoming the welterweight world champion. So, double up. Why not? That would be like history.”

It’s clear that “Rocky” is shooting for the stars, but he’ll need to be focused on “Chaos” when the two meet on December 16 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
