Henry Cejudo is piggybacking off of a bold statement by Daniel Cormier with his own take.

As the sport of MMA matures we as fans are seeing more and more former fighters and champions turning to the commentary and analyst side of things. Two of the best in the analyst game are Henry Cejudo and Daniel Cormier. These two retired champions have very different styles to share their knowledge with fans. Cormier hosts a show on ESPN and sits cage side at events to give live commentary. Cejudo tends to appear on his and others’ YouTube channels. Now they are both taking a look at a huge upcoming bout, with different opinions.

Recently Cormier made headlines with a bold claim. He said that he thought a win by Alexander Volkanovski over Islam Makhachev would be the biggest upset in the history of the sport. Many fans did not agree with this and let him know on social media. Now Cejudo is taking a look at both the bout itself and Cormier’s statement.

Henry Cejudo thinks Daniel Cormier was wrong to doubt Alexander Volkanovski’s achievements

The featherweight champion Volkanovski will be moving up in weight to take on the newly crowned Makhachev, but calling a win the biggest upset ever did not sit well with Cejudo. He released a video on his YouTube channel to debate Cormier’s take.

“Makhachev only has, literally, he hasn’t even defended his belt yet,” he said. “We haven’t seen up against Poirier, we haven’t seen him up against a lot of these guys. Could he beat those guys, 100 percent, but let’s hit the brakes there for a minute DC, it’s probably still premature because quite honestly he still hasn’t fought the best.”

Cejudo thinks that hyping Makhachev up that much at this early stage in his career is precocious. He thinks that although he has Makhachev winning the upcoming bout, the resume of Volkanovski is too great to determine it a huge upset. He can think of a few other bouts where one fighter scored a bigger upset.

“I still do have Islam Makhachev stopping Alexander Volkanovski but for that same reason will it be Volkanovski? I am making a bold statement myself. It’ll be up there man, the more I think about it, it’ll be up there but it’s definitely not a St-Pierre versus Matt Serra, you can’t compare that,” he said. “It’s definitely not Amanda Nunes versus Julianna Peña like I just I can’t do that.”

Cejudo thinks people are counting Volkanovski out because he is shorter than Makhachev. He believes that Volkanovski’s height is actually a positive for him. Cejudo feels that being shorter will help him avoid some of the takedown attempts by Makhachev.
