  • Jiri Prochazka dethroned Glover Teixeira in their UFC 275 bout
  • The 42-year-old is looking forward to getting an instant rematch

UFC 275’s main event did not fail to deliver as Glover Teixeira and Jiri Prochazka engaged in an entertaining yet bloody championship bout. Teixeira could’ve retained his title had the fight boiled down to the judges’ scorecards. However, the challenger pulled off an unexpected submission that finished the champ, who is now calling for a quick rematch.

Run it back

In all fairness, Teixeira, at 42,  put on an exceptional performance against Prochazka. He was able to get the better of his challenger on the ground but Prochazka somehow managed to always slip through and get away from the champ.

Two judges were in favor of Teixeira in the scorecards heading into the fifth and final round. The back and forth continued and the Brazilian was edging closer to possibly defending his title until Prochazka took advantage of Teixeira’s exposed neck and completed a rear-naked choke with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fight.

Prochazka was still savoring his victory as the new UFC light heavyweight champion when Teixeira already challenged him for a “rematch” on Twitter, tagging UFC boss Dana White as well.

While a quick rematch is viable, Teixeira might have to compete with other 205-pounders that are also candidates for title contention.

Aside from Teixeira, the winner between Magomed Ankalaev and Anthony Smith at UFC 277 is also likely to get a shot at the belt next. Jamahal Hill and former UFC light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz are also being mentioned in the conversation.

Far from over

Given Teixeira’s age, some believe that he should already be considering retirement. However, after a solid performance against a younger opponent, the former light heavyweight king swiftly shut the idea down.

“Did I look 42 out there? No? Then I’m going to keep going,” Teixeira said in his octagon interview.

With a newly crowned champion, and a host of deserving title contenders, things could only be getting more interesting in the UFC light heavyweight division.
