  • Gilbert Burns alleged that Jorge Masvidal applied a substantial amount of lotion ahead of their UFC 287 fight
  • “Durinho” is certain he could’ve finished “Gamebred” if it wasn’t for the lotion

Gilbert Burns secured a unanimous decision victory over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287 to extend his winning streak to two in a row. After the fight, “Durinho” said he could’ve pulled off a finish if “Gamebred” had not applied lotion on his body.

Too slippery to finish

Speaking to reporters during his post-fight press conference, Burns explained how the lotion works to the advantage of a fighter and based on his knowledge, it’s “an old dog Miami trick.”

“I had three takedown attempts and I finished all three. A lot of wrestlers didn’t do that. High-level wrestlers that he fought were having trouble taking him down, I didn’t. I think I showed a lot of improvement, and that guy was freaking slippery. That’s an old dog Miami trick with a lotion because he was so slippery,” Burns began.

“100 percent, I do believe [he used lotion],” he continued. “I know those old tricks that those guys do. They wake up on Sunday [Saturday] and take the first shower, and they put a lot of lotion on their body…. The skin absorbs the lotion, and then you do that after three hours, you do that again, and then after you do it again, then after you do it again. Whenever he starts to sweat a lot [shakes his head]. For sure, he did that 100 percent. I’m telling you, it wasn’t maybe, maybe not. He was so slippery. Whenever you’re watching the highlights, try to see, you’re gonna see, like, he’s bright, his skin’s bright. I gotta give it up to this guy. The guy has all the tricks.”

When asked if he thinks he could’ve stopped Masvidal without lotion on his body, “Durinho” confidently said yes and stressed that “Gamebred” did not present any threat to him the entire fight.

“100 percent! I didn’t feel he’s strong at all,” the Brazilian pointed out.

After the rematch between Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn at UFC 94, the UFC banned the use of vaseline or any grease or oil that could make a fighter too slippery. It is considered cheating as fighters who have the advantage in grappling situations might find is very difficult to control an opponent who has vaseline or lotion on his body. However, it is rumored that some UFC fighters still do it to this day.

Title shot or just forget about it

The reigning welterweight champ Leon Edwards was hoping Masvidal could beat Burns as he badly wants to settle their past feud inside the Octagon. However, “Gamebred” decided to retire after the loss.

Burns is confident he has made himself a potential title challenger following the win and he is not taking no for an answer. If the UFC doesn’t give him the title shot, the Brazilian swore he’d take his talents elsewhere.

“I’m next in line to fight for the title, and otherwise let me go. Let me do my thing, you know these guys are making a million dollars a year in other organizations. That’s it. I’m a backup for the next fight. And I’m fighting for the title next,” Burns concluded.

While Burns seems to be a serious title shot candidate, Colby Covington recently claimed that the UFC has already assured him that he is next in line. And if Edwards refuses to fight, the promotion will strip him.
