Enson Inoue has embarked on a 1,200 kilometer spiritual journey…by foot

In that Kung-Fu show, Caine wandered the earth looking for crime to solve that would fit in a one-hour episode. Eventually he found a closest in downtown Bangkok and died by autoerotic asphyxiation. They would never show that episode, probably because it was already leaked on the internet via gruesome autopsy pictures. RIP David Carradine and his highly underrated filmography. Fortunately, we have Enson Inoue to continue his voyage across the earth, only this time it will be a spiritual journey and hopefully not involve any form of autoeroticism.

As of yesterday, Enson Inoue embarked on a 1,200 kilometer spiritual journey on the island of Shikoku off the coast of Japan. The six-week journey is called the ’88 Temple Pilgrimage’, a voyage that most people travel by bus. However, there exist that select few of hardcore fanatics that circumnavigate the entire island by foot. According to Wikipedia, people who decide to walk the pilgrimage have to wear white jackets with the words Dōgyō Ninin on their back which means ‘two traveling together’, the other person is a spirit of a monk named Kōbō Daishi.

According to his blog (which he will be updating daily), the day before his spiritual journey, elder monks warned him that the heat on the island was unbearable and that it would be impossible for any human to withstand.

I just arrived at Reizanji. Tomorrow morning this is where I will start my journey.

The people at the temple said the heat is really bad now and that it was impossible to make it without staying at a hotel.

When I heard that it became a challege for me. When I told the old man that I wasn’t going to stay in a hotel he replied,「There is no way you can make it without staying in a hotel.」 I then responded by saying that there was no way I was going to stay in a hotel and he repeated it 3 times that it was impossible. At that moment I decided in my heart that even if I were at the brink of death, I wasn’t going to stay not even 1 night in a hotel.

Of course Enson Inoue is going to do it without a hotel. On his blog, he also mentions that he added an extra twenty temples which will extend his travel time by a few more days. The only items Enson will bring is a 50lb backpack, walking stick, hat and an epic fanny pack. Have a safe journey Yamato Damashii, be sure to bring us back something. Props to The Grappling Dummy for the tip. [Source]
