Dustin Poirier will be taking on Justin Gaethje once again at UFC 291.
Dustin Poirier is looking at the BMF title as another accolade
Poirier has been in the UFC since 2011. He has grown to become one of the most well-known and well-liked fighters on the roster. He is still on his quest for UFC gold but when this BMF title was presented it was too much fun to pass up. Poirier believes that he and Gaethje are the most violent fighters on the UFC roster and there is perhaps nobody more deserving of fighting for this belt. He spoke to The MMA Hour about this.
“I mean, this fight, I think could headline without a BMF title. This is an exciting fight but that just adds more fun to it for me, you know, I would love to have that strap up there in my living room. Another accolade,” he said. “If you look at our track record of, you know, competing for the “Fight of the Years” over the last for me over the last 10, 11 years. We have a lot of huge fights that have been voted on for “Fight of the Year,” one was against each other. Just look at the bonuses and the “Fight of the Nights” and the carnage that me and him both display in there. It makes sense to have something fun like that, you know, we’re always talking about lightweight, most violent fighter. So we run it back for the most violent call it the BMF call or whatever you want.”

Poirier has not spoken to the last BMF title holder, Masvidal since this bout was announced. He saw a social media post about it and knows that Masvidal approves. He plans on discussing things later this year when he takes his family down to Florida from training.
