Demetrious Johnson added another impressive accomplishment to further his legacy.
‘Mighty Mouse’ is undoubtedly one of the greatest martial artists of all time. The former 12x UFC flyweight champion has accomplished more in his career than most fighters could ever imagine, but he’s not done yet.
On Thursday, August 31, Johnson competed in the 2023 World Master IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The MMA legend was placed in the Master 2 featherweight Gi division for brown belts, where he found tremendous success.
Johnson looked phenomenal throughout the tournament, leading to five consecutive wins, including one by submission, to earn a spot in the finals. Once the dust had settled, ‘Mighty Mouse’ emerged victorious and secured first place in his first IBJJF outing.
‘Mighty Mouse’ is at a stage in his career where he has accomplished more than enough. As a result, he has voiced his desire to prioritize fights and competitions that intrigue him the most. IBJJF was on his bucket list, so the former UFC flyweight champion locked in and conquered the challenge.
Demetrious Johnson made his professional MMA debut in August 2009. Fourteen years later, he’s established a legendary resume featuring a record of 25-4-1, including thirteen wins inside the distance. Luckily for the fans, ‘Mighty Mouse’ might not be done fighting.
What’s next for Demetrious Johnson in MMA?
In 2018, the UFC and ONE Championship made a shocking trade, sending Demetrious Johnson to ONE and Ben Askren to the UFC. Since then, ‘Mighty Mouse’ has taken over the flyweight division in the Chatri Sityodtong-run promotion.
Johnson started with three consecutive wins to become the ONE Flyweight MMA Grand Prix world champion. In April 2021, he attempted to secure the undisputed title but came up short against Adriano Moraes.
Before returning to the flyweight MMA division, ‘Mighty Mouse’ defeated worldwide fan-favorite Rodtang in a mixed-rules bout with a second-round submission.
Between August 2022 and May 2023, Demetrious Johnson secured back-to-back wins against Adriano Moraes to become the ONE flyweight MMA world champion. The question is, will he return to the Circle before retiring?
Johnson teased his retirement before his trilogy bout against Moraes. Luckily, the MMA legend hasn’t made an official decision. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the problem could be that ‘Mighty Mouse’ isn’t overly excited about potentially fighting other less-known flyweight contenders like Kairat Akhmetov and Danny Kingad.
Only time will tell if Demetrious Johnson fights again before retiring from MMA.
