Daniel Cormier: UFC Wants Him To Relinquish 205-Pound Title For Jones Vs. Gustafsson

Daniel Cormier Says UFC Wants Jones Vs. Gustafsson At Light Heavyweight Title

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones have maintained arguably one of the most long-lasting and heated rivalries in the UFC. Both have gone back and forth with each other on social media, at press conferences, and in interviews over the years. Jones already holds two wins over Cormier, first meeting by decision and second bout by head kick knockout – later that win overturned to no contest for ‘Bones’ when he failed the drug test.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones recently received a retroactive 15-month suspension for his second failed drug test, that means he’s eligible to return to UFC Octagon by late October.

Most recently ‘Bones’ is in talks to make his long-awaited return at UFC 232 Pay-Per-View on December 29 against his former rival Alexander Gustafsson. The promotion has its way, as their rematch could be for the light heavyweight title which is currently held by Cormier. ‘DC’ said UFC likely to strip him of the title so the division can move forward. Cormier feels that matter made things between he and promotion tensed.

“They are going to take that belt. Because I am scheduled to fight Brock, I cannot fight at 205 first, so I am pretty sure they will take that title. One of the things that I ask for as a competitor is that if they do take they belt, the guarantee me a title fight upon the result of the fight that those guys will have,” he said on a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. It’s clear that Cormier’s upset on the idea of losing his title, but also make sure with promotion to grant him a title shot against the winner once he settled his business with Brock Lesnar.

“Initially they told me they were going to do this for Gustafsson vs. Romero and I told them to guarantee me a title shot when the result is done. So if the rumors are true of Jones vs. Gustafsson, I imagine it’s going to be for the belt. Just guarantee me a title shot when it’s done.”

A blockbuster fight with Brock Lesnar is still not official, but Cormier is confident that it would get done. Cormier says after defending his heavyweight title in January, he can make a quick turn around to meet the winner of Jones vs. Gustafsson in March 2019 and then retire.

Cormier goes off on USADA for Jones reduced suspension well thanks to snitching clause. ‘DC’ also blasted Jones on social media, called him a scumbag for USADA snitch and repeated drug test failures.

“Crocop was offered the same deal. This is not anything new, Jon was just the only one that took it. Jonny Brasco. Jon will be in Albuquerque, a black USADA car pulls up, they take him in somewhere and Jon starts handing out information, screen grabs and everything,” he added.

“How do you tell? How are you going to tell on somebody else, man? You got 30 months reduced off your suspension, and his team is out there saying he told on himself. No he didn’t. USADA came back and said that’s not true. Not only did he snitch, he still has to cooperate and keep doing so if he wants to keep his deal.”

Do you want to see Daniel Cormier to fight third time with Jones or should he retire following Brock Lesnar fight?
