Daniel Cormier was not satisfied with how Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington played out at UFC 296 and he is certain it wasn’t because of the champion’s performance.

UFC 296 left DC wanting more

Speaking on his YouTube channel, DC commended “Rocky” for putting on a dominant performance against Covington to defend his welterweight title. Unfortunately, Cormier came clean and pointed out that “Chaos” failed to back all his trash-talks and it ultimately resulted in a lackluster grudge match.

“Colby Covington and Leon Edwards was a grudge match if there’s ever going to be a grudge match of fighting because of the things that Colby said about Leon’s dad, it was very nasty. And if I’m being completely honest, while it was a completely dominant performance by the champion, I feel like it left me wanting a little more. Because generally, when we have these grudge match type of fights, we have really fun, exciting, all-action fights, and then we have a little bit of stuff afterwards,” Cormier explained.

“All those fights that have all that bad blood usually they’re very fun fights, there’s a little more to it. We didn’t really get that,” he added.

“It wasn’t Leon’s fault,” he continued. “He, as the champion came out and fought a very typical Leon Edwards fight. A fight where he’s in control and he makes you fight his fight at his pace. The only way this fight was going to be fun was if Colby Covington put on that pace that he was so known for. Tonight, he didn’t do that.”

No rematch

Unsurprisingly, Covington did not ask for a quick rematch and focused on a potential showdown with Stephen Thompson instead. On the other hand, Edwards swiftly moved on but has yet to pick his next challenger.

Edwards has now defended his welterweight title twice and is aiming to break Georges St-Pierre record of nine title defenses.
