- Daniel Cormier commented on Islam Makhachev’s three-fight campaign plan for 2024
- DC thinks it is possible as long as Islam fights before Ramadan begins and if the opponents will be Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier
Daniel Cormier thinks Islam Makhachev could fight all three of his top challengers in one calendar year.
A three-fight year is feasible
Speaking to his YouTube channel, DC weighed in on Makhachev’s plan to fight or defend his title three times in 2024. According to Cormier, it’s not impossible, especially if Islam’s first fight, which is against Charles Oliveira, will be booked before the start of Ramadan, which will start on March 10th.
“What do those fights look like?” Charles Oliveira first, we know that Dustin Poirier, on the one hand but say Makhachev gets it done in March, I will say, because that’s what I’m going to believe, who would be second? Justin Gaethje. Gaethje has made his intentions clear, he’s gonna wait [for Makhachev]. He wants this fight because he feels he has a good style to fight Islam. Third, I think we get Dustin Poirier. I think Islam Makhachev has an opportunity in next year, to run the gauntlet. Of all the most relevant lightweights that we have seen over the past 10 years, he can fight Charles, Justin, and Dustin all in a calender year.”
Islam is expecting a big year
Makhachev will close out his 2023 with a bang as he became the UFC’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter following his epic KO win over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. While it is yet to be known who’s next for Islam, the reigning lightweight champ has his sights set on a move up to the welterweight division to compete for a double champ status.
On the other hand, Makhachev’s team is also not ruling out a potential super fight with Conor McGregor. However, UFC president Dana White seems to be vouching for a rematch with Oliveira first.
