Daniel Cormier has given a humorous look back at his press conference brawl with Jon Jones back in 2014.
Cormier and Jones have been bitter rivals for quite some time. They had two meetings with their first encounter in early 2015 ending in a unanimous decision win for “Bones.” Jones initially won their rematch in 2017 via head kick and ground-and-pound, but the result was changed to a no contest after “Bones” popped for turinabol.
Daniel Cormier Almost Bit Jon Jones
Daniel Cormier appeared as a guest on episode #150 of the “JRE MMA Show.” During the show, “DC” recalled him and Jon Jones getting into a brawl during staredowns for a press conference, and admitted he was considering pulling off a move that would’ve been made the late 90s version of Mike Tyson proud.
“We were at the MGM Grand and he headbutted me, like put his head on me,” Cormier said. “So, I push him. He’s an alpha male, too. So, the f*cker attacks me,” Cormier said before he and Joe Rogan laughed. “And we’re fighting, and Joe, the security guard from the UFC, falls under me but now I’m on my back as we go flying off of the stage. I will say there was a thought to bite the motherf*cker because, like, what am I doing on my back?”
How Did Jones Tear His Pectoral?
Cormier and Joe Rogan also discussed Jones’ transition to heavyweight and how growing pains in the adjustment may have led to a pectoral tear. It’s an injury that forced Jones’ planned UFC 295 title defense against Stipe Miocic to be pushed back.
“That and the extra weight, right? He’s carrying all that extra weight, he’s lifting all that weight,” Cormier said. “You’ve gotta develop muscle, but it’s gotta be usable muscle. You can’t just be big.”
What Makes Jones Difficult to Fight?
As mentioned, “DC” has been inside the Octagon with “Bones” twice. Cormier detailed what makes Jones a tough puzzle to solve.
“When you’re fighting guys like Jones, he’s so tall, he’s so rangy, and he just understood fighting,” Cormier said. “The guy just understands fighting, and it makes him hard to deal with. Joe, when you get in the clinch with this dude, he’s so tall that it’s almost like you’re holding him up if you’re the shorter fighter. He’s like draping over the top of you, and that is what fatigues you.”
