Colby Covington has reflected on his one-sided victory over Jorge Masvidal.
Back in March 2022, Covington vs. Masvidal headlined UFC 272 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a grudge match, as Covington and Masvidal had a falling out that led to some bad blood between the two. During their matchup, Covington’s pressure and grappling ended up earning him a clear unanimous decision victory.
Colby Covington Looks Back On Jorge Masvidal Fight
During an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Colby Covington said that he always got the upper hand on Masvidal anytime they were rolling on the mat or in the cage.
“It was an easy fight, five rounds of domination, 50-43 and a soda,” Covington said. “Been big brothering that guy my whole life. He’s never won a second of any round off me. So, just another dominating performance, especially coming off a three-month turnaround for beating Marty Usman in Madison Square Garden.”
Unfortunately, Covington’s beef with Masvidal spilled out on the streets. Back in November, Masvidal pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from his alleged attack on Covington outside of a steakhouse in Miami Beach in 2022. “Chaos” said Masvidal’s attack chipped his tooth and he even claimed to have suffered brain damage.
Covington is scheduled for a UFC welterweight title fight against champion Leon Edwards in the main event of UFC 296 on December 16. Meanwhile for Masvidal, he has retired from pro MMA competition, but has expressed his desire to compete in the world of boxing. Bare knuckle boxer and former UFC fighter Mike Perry has said he wants to fight Masvidal because he feels “Gamebred” can hurt him and he lives for moments like that.
Masvidal does run his own bare knuckle fighting organization, but whether or not he’d actually prizefight under bare knuckle rules remains to be seen.
