Colby Covington explained why he consistently expresses his political views.
It’s no secret that ‘Chaos’ is a conservative-minded person who never passes up the opportunity to support Donald Trump. Covington’s political views have led to plenty of backlash but also attracted more attention than in the early stages of his fighting career.
Covington recently appeared on Tim Pool’s YouTube channel, Timcast IRL, which has 1.48 million subscribers. During their discussion, ‘Chaos’ explained why he became outspoken on politics:
“I’ve always grew up conservative my whole entire life, but I really started to branch out when I saw the media and all the athletes were just shoving one way down your throat, the liberal why. I’m like why is nobody talking about conservative beliefs? I started to realize like all these athletes don’t want to disrupt their gravy train. They are getting paid by these general managers, these owners, these managers, or whatever, and if they say something, they are gonna be bagging groceries at Walmart.”
Colby Covington last fought in March 2022, defeating Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision in the UFC 272 main event. Several days after their fight, Masvidal allegedly attacked ‘Chaos’ at a restaurant in Miami, leading to an ongoing lawsuit.
Covington went off the grid for several months before weighing in as the backup for the UFC 286 main event, which featured Leon Edwards defending the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman. As a result, Dana White revealed ‘Chaos’ as the next 170-pound title challenger.
Colby Covington reveals how Reebok tried to get Dana White to release him
Between 2014 and 2021, the UFC partnered with Reebok for their official uniforms. During that time, Colby Covington claimed that the athletic apparel brand was unhappy with his political views, leading to requests for his release. Covington had this to say during the same discussion with Tim Pool:
“We had Reebok was sponsoring the UFC and they didn’t sponsor me individually, they just sponsored the company. After one of my fights, they tried to retract some of my statements, saying ‘Oh, we don’t stand for what Colby Covington believes. We’re asking him to get fired from the UFC.’ Dana [White] was just like laughing.”
Covington is expected to fight Leon Edwards for the UFC welterweight championship later this year. ‘Chaos’ wanted the bout to happen at UFC London in July, but Edwards needed more time off after recently fighting in March. ‘Rocky’ hopes to defend his throne at UFC 292 in October.
