Cody Garbrandt walked into T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night desperate for a win. Dropping back-to-back fights and five of his last six, the former UFC bantamweight titleholder had his back against the wall going into his UFC 285 scrap with Trevin Jones. Going into the evening’s featured prelim in a similar situation, Jones has lost three in a row and is a mere 1-3-1 inside the Octagon since his promotional debut in 2020.
Round 1
Right kick to the body of Jones from Garbrandt to start the round. Another big body kick by Garbrandt then follows it up with a leg kick. Jones begins to stalk Garbrandt and unleashes his own body kick. Garbrandt throws a solid right that partially connects. Overhand right by Garbrandt. 1-2 by Jones misses and Garbrandt does a little showboating. Jones fires a front kick then another to the body. Front kick by Garbrandt. Right hand by Garbrandt. Jones returns fire with a straight right followed by a front kick. Body kick from Garbrandt before dancing around the Octagon as the first round comes to an anticlimactic close.
Round 2
Body kick by Garbrant to open the round. Jones throws a looping overhand and Garbrandt quickly changes levels and takes Jones down, but he gets back to his feet with relative ease. Inside leg kick by Jones. Body kick by Jones. Garbrandt again changes levels and scores an easy takedown, but Jones threatens a guillotine. Garbrandt is able to pop his head out of danger and maintains top control. Jones gives up his back as he works his way back to his feet. Garbrandt lands a knee as Jones is able to break the grip and separate. Jones moves in and clinches with Garbrandt against the fence. Garbrandt reverses position. Jones reverses again and holds Garbrandt until the round ends.
Round 3
Trevin Jones comes out putting on the pressure but is not offering much offense. Jones throws a high kick that is easily blocked by Garbrandt. Low kick by Garbrandt. Body kick by Garbrandt followed by a takedown attempt, but Jones stuffs it. Garbrandt continues to move laterally as Jones does next to nothing. Finally, Jones lands a big right hand that clearly hurts Garbrandt. Jones continues to move in and lands a solid left. Garbrandt ties Jones up against the fence. Jones reverses position and drags Garbrandt to the ground. Jones postures up and eats an up kick. Jones delivered a right hand on his way back down. Jones maintains top control until the final bell sounds.
