Chael Sonnen has weighed in on Jorge Masvidal announcing his comeback.
Back in April 2023, Masvidal suffered his fourth loss in a row when he dropped a unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns. During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, “Gamebred” announced his retirement from pro MMA competition. Since that time, Masvidal has admitted still having the itch to compete.
Masvidal didn’t give his retirement a full year, announcing his comeback in early 2024.
Chael Sonnen Not Sold On Jorge Masvidal Staying With UFC For Return
In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen expressed his belief that there’s only one way Jorge Masvidal’s return fight is under the UFC banner, and the chances of it happening are slim.
“There’s one in a million chance that he goes back, and if he got everything together and he got it all planned, he’s got a deal done behind the scenes that would have to be him versus [Justin] Gaethje at ’70 for the BMF,” Sonnen said. “The only way you could make up for his retirement or that you could make up for the discrepancy within records is if you spot him the weight and you move Gaethje to 170 and you make it for a BMF.”
If Sonnen is to be believed, then Masvidal has no say in the matter.
“I know Masvidal is not going to fight in the UFC ever again, and that it is not his choice unless it’s at 300 for the belt against Gaethje,” Sonnen said. “I’m not predicting it for you, I’m all but guaranteeing you it’s not gonna happen.”
Sonnen went on to say that he’s happy Masvidal is planning a comeback. He said that combat sports is more fun when “Gamebred” is fighting. If he doesn’t find his way back to the UFC, Masvidal likely wouldn’t be short on options, including his own bare knuckle fighting promotion. We’ll keep you posted on Masvidal’s fighting future.
