  • The boxing champion is not sure about when the fight will take place

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is currently gearing up for his light heavyweight return as he takes on WBA champion Dmitry Bivol next month. Despite being locked in on prolonging his success in boxing, Alvarez is still open to fighting UFC’s pound-for-pound champion Kamaru Usman. However, the Mexican superstar is in no rush.

Only time can tell

In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Alvarez doubled down on his desire to make history once again by facing Usman in a boxing match. While the interest is there, he also stressed that it’s not one of his top priorities at the moment.

“Never say no, but right now it’s not in my future,” Alvarez said of fighting Usman. “Not right now. Yeah, it’s all about legacy right now, but you never know.”

It’s the other way around for Usman

By contrast, the reigning welterweight champion, on the other hand, is considering fighting Alvarez first before making his return to the UFC.

For Usman, while there is still no clear-cut No. 1 contender in his division, he will glad to delight the fans with a super fight against the Mexican superstar for the mean time.

“Right now, they’re right there all in the bunch and while they’re right there in the bunch, we all know who the pound for pound champion is, and we all know who the pound for pound champion in boxing is, so why not entertain the world, why not entertain the fans and fight Canelo,” Usman told MMA Junkie last month.

When asked if he thinks the Alvarez fight will happen, “The Nigerian Nightmare” replied:

“Absolutely. Why wouldn’t it be a possibility? pound for pound versus pound for pound.”

Alvarez will face Bivol on May 7 and is likely to have a trilogy match against Gennadiy Golovkin in the final quarter of the year. With Usman still hasn’t fully-recovered yet from his hand injury, it might take a long period of time before they finally clash inside the ring.
