Cain Velasquez Eyes Title Fight With Jon Jones If Daniel Cormier Retires

Cain Velaquez Wants To Fight Controversial Champion Jon Jones: ‘I’ll Try To Make That Happen’

Cain Velasquez a former two-time heavyweight champion, who many still believe as the greatest heavyweight fighter in MMA history has been plagued by injuries that have waylaid his career.

Velasquez who’s now healthy and is returning to Octagon against former heavyweight title challenger Francis Ngannou in the main event of the UFC on ESPN 1, which will go down on February 17 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

If Velasquez scores a win over Ngannou next month, of course, it’ll open the door to other big fights in the division. And the one two-time UFC champion eyes the most is a fight with newly crowned light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who has a long-standing rivalry with his training partner Daniel Cormier.

Cormier who also happens to be current heavyweight champion. ‘DC’ already stated many times that he’ll retire from the sport when he turns 40 this march and before that he wants the biggest fight of his career against Brock Lesnar. As time passing by, this super fight is increasingly unlikely due to Lesnar’s drug test debacle, and he still owes commision a fine of $250,000. It’s also unclear how many fight Cormier has left. UFC president Dana White also want Cormier to postpone his retirement and fight Jones at heavyweight. In one of his Tweet Cormier said, he’d be open to fighting Jones for the third time if latter comes out clean.

‘Bones’ who already said he’s not interested in moving up to the heavyweight division to fight Cormier for the third time to prove his legacy. ‘Bones’ currently linked to facing Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 on March 2. From the sounds of it, Cormier vs. Jones may never happen.

But hold your horses, Cain Velasquez said if his friend and training partner Daniel Cormier retires he’d be happy to take over the division. He recently told MMA Fighting’s Shaun Al-Shatti, he hopes to fight ‘Bones’ one day and will try to make that happen.

MMA fans have been asking for Jones vs. Velasquez for years, and from the sounds of it, Velasquez is up for a challenge.

“I hope so,” Velasquez told MMA Fighting of this potential fight this week. “I’ll try to make that happen.”

Velasquez last fought on July 2016 where he scored a first-round TKO win over Travis Browne at UFC 200.

Who wants to see Velasquez vs. Jones fight down the road?
