Ortega says he put the current champ in the most danger of his career.

Brian Ortega believes he’s a ‘deadly’ challenge for Alexander Volkanovski.

‘T-City’ proved that in his first fight with Volkanovski, nearly submitting the UFC Featherweight Champion not just once but twice. Ortega tightly squeezed the neck of Volkanovski, who almost tapped to his triangle and guillotine attempts. But ‘The Great’ would make a great escape.

Title Shot ‘Politics’

Ortega would ultimately lose a unanimous decision to the champ, but remains at the top of the featherweight list. He takes on Yair Rodriguez this weekend, which may have title shot implications for the winner. While it’s a big fight, Ortega is skeptical if this will land him another opportunity at gold.

“It’s hard for me to decide honestly,” Ortega told Inside Fighting, when asked if he should get a title shot with a win over Rodriguez. “A lot of people lately [have been saying] ‘you already got two shots’. At this point, it ain’t my job anymore. I need to do my job and fight and win.

“Basically, see where politics and how this sh*t goes out. It’s either there’s some new people that got ranked, they wanna see them get the shot versus someone who has gotten the shot.”

‘I’m A Deadly Opponent For Him’

While Ortega isn’t sure if he’ll get another title opportunity with a win this weekend, one thing is for sure. He would absolutely take a rematch with Volkanovski, without question.

“I would love [a rematch with Volkanovski] personally,” Ortega continued. “From what the world is saying, he’s won the belt, he’s defended the belt and the one person who gave him the hardest time was me. Put him in the most danger he’s ever been in his career. He finished Zombie, he beat Max three times. I put him in the most danger. People noticed, people saw.

“I’m a deadly opponent for him. Obviously I’m always going to try to win, fight this guy, beat this guy and I believe I have the tools and capability to do so if I play my cards right. It’s all about seeing how I can play my cards right and going in there and finishing this guy.”
