Ben Askren Contemplates Retirement After UFC Singapore

Ben Askren Thinks About Retirement after Fight with Demian Maia

Ben Askren’s MMA career as a whole has been nothing short of successful. However, simply looking at Bens UFC run would quite possibly change that perception. Askren is no stranger to stepping away from competing in mixed martial arts. And, self-admittingly, the idea of retirement as this particular moment in Ben’s career is something he thinks about.

After Askren’s loss to Demian Maia at UFC Singapore, he put out a very critical tweet of himself. Also, he apologized to the fans that he believed he let down during the fight.

On the following Monday, Askren made yet another appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. During his interview on the program, Askren opened up about the idea of retirement. In the past, Askren simply wanted an opportunity to prove he belonged in the UFC. Which is why if he were to retire now after losing to Maia, he wouldn’t have regrets after accomplishing that goal.

Ben Askren Speaks About Retirement

“All I wanted was an opportunity. That is all I ever said I wanted. And, I got my opportunity, so it would be hard to be bitter or disgruntled in any way because I had the opportunity I wanted to and I have not been able to execute on that opportunity and that is on me. That is (a) kind of one thought process,” said Askren.

Furthermore, Ben went on to discuss his performance at UFC Singapore. Knowing that he can still compete at a high level made Ben feel confident. However, he highlighted that he still needs to think about his next moves going forward.

“Demian Maia is a guy who has fought for a world title in multiple weight classes, said Askren.” And, (his) only losses in the last five-plus years are to the three guys, Marty (Kamaru Usman), Colby, and Tyron (Woodley). So, I guess that is something I need to sit and think about and what is next for me.”

What Could be Next for Ben

With so many interests outside of the sport of MMA, if Askren calls it quits, he’ll still be noticeable in the community. Ben listed his vested interests in cryptocurrencies and his desire to coach wrestling at his academy full time once again.

Who knows exactly what is next for Ben. But, whatever he decides to do next, he can walk with his head held high knowing he got the chance he never thought he’d get.
