After a night of Fitch getting Fitch’d and Overeem getting knocked the eff out, I thought there was a chance that Frankie Edgar was about to do the seemingly impossible and ‘Aldo’ Jose Aldo. But, when you look at it in hindsight, this was the exact type of fight from Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar you expected.
Official UFC 156 Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar bulletpoints:
- Frankie Edgar bloody nose? Check.
- Leg kicks? Check. From both fighters.
- Jose Aldo slowing down with a surging Frankie post round three. It happened.
- Early dominance by Aldo only for Frankie to rally back with a black eye? Yep.
- Controversy on social networks over the decision. Somewhat, yes.
- Leg welts. This fight had them.
- Calls for a rematch. Yep.
It was a great fight in a night full of shocking moments. UFC 156 will be remembered for a long, long time with all of the ripples bumping the rankings appropriately. Rashad dropping to fight Anderson now? Looks like he might have to establish himself at middleweight first. Where does Overeem go from here? Werdum rubber-match? JDS? Barnett, if he comes into the UFC is absolutely in the mix, and Demian Maia makes an already deep welterweight division into quicksand. Let’s do Maia/Woodley. Frankie? He could be a contender in three weight classes if he wanted to be.
