First Official Footage From Sony’s H1Z1 Released

DAVE: Yesterday the folks at Sony Online Entertainment ran a marathon, twelve-hour long Twitch stream that would show what a day in the life of the devs behind H1Z1 looks like. There was pizza, hot assistants, nerdy dudes in cargo shorts, posters on the walls and, oh yeah, a look at the game itself. The game is a Massively Multiplayer Online survival game, much in the vein of games like Rust and DayZ, only with a promise of it featuring more options for building and more polished gameplay.

Since it is from the people who have brought us games like PlanetSide 2 — using the PlanetSide 2 engine — we can expect it to be a quality title, especially if you are into the whole zombie apocalypse thing. The game will launch later this year as a free-to-play title, with a promised Steam Early Access version coming in the following weeks.

So here is a look at the first bit of gameplay released by Sony and, as you can see, they look pretty far along in the game.

JASON: This looks like a combination of DayZ and Rust, and that’s not a bad thing, but what I like about DayZ is that it was created by a man who is someone who will actually go out into the woods of eastern Europe and just survive for a while. I feel like there’s a lot of love behind DayZ because it wasn’t made because the the Zombie/Survival genre was hot, it was made because it had to be made. It’s now the grandfather of the genre it invented, and now we’re seeing tons of spin offs.

While this will light a fire under Bohemia Interactive in a way we haven’t seen since Strikeforce pushed the UFC and WCW pushed WWF, I still wonder if Sony knows what it’s doing here. Granted, it’s F2P, and I will play the **** out of it, but it seems very… Action-y. I don’t know if I care too much about that. The building looks cool, but I’d rather wait for DayZ to be in a good state and dedicate myself to a game in which I can move into a forest, kill a deer and survive off rainwater and venison for a few weeks.

I like weird gaming experiences. I don’t really need to kill more zeds.
