Legendary boxing trainer and coach Teddy Atlas is not convinced that Tyson Fury was in his best form mentally against Francis Ngannou. In his scorecard, Atlas saw it eight rounds to two in favor of “The Gypsy King.”

Francis punched better

Speaking on The Fight with Teddy Atlas, the man in question pointed out that as far as punching goes, Ngannou edged Fury simply because the Lineal heavyweight champ looked startled by how things were playing out.

“Not unprepared physically but perhaps, mentally,” Atlas said of Fury.

“[Ngannou] was the puncher in this fight no doubt about it. Fury is a terrific fighter, a terrific boxer and everything else but he’s not the pure puncher. He’s a big guy, he hits you, he knocks out certain guys, he knocked out Wilder twice I mean, he hit you with all that size, he hit you right of course he’s a puncher but pure TNT, only certain guys have it and I think the guy who really had it that night in a pure way is probably Ngannou,” he continued.

Teddy’s scorecard

Atlas went on and revealed his scorecard based on the actual notes he did while watching the fight from ringside. In it, the veteran coach only had Rounds 3 and 8 in favor of the former UFC heavyweight champion. The rest, Atlas gave it to Fury. However, he also indicated that “The Gypsy King” won only because there was less action and Ngannou wasn’t able to close it with a bang.

“My final score: 97-93 for Mr. Fury and like I said [in] my comments, lots of posturing, feinting, half jabs, lot of looking, could have been more even rounds, possibly,” Atlas concluded.

Undoubtedly, Ngannou’s knockdown on Fury in the third round was the only notable highlight of the fight. It was also the reason why unlike Atlas, most combat sports personalities saw Ngannou as the winner. However, it was Fury who earned a split decision victory.

Ngannou is now focused on his PFL debut but insists he would compete in both boxing and MMA. On the other hand, Fury was scheduled to face Oleksandr Usyk for a unification bout on December 23 but latest update stated that it has now been ruled out.
