Heavyweight boxing icons Michael Spinks and James ‘Buster’ Douglas are set for a return to the ring! … Sort of.
Damon Feldman, the creator of Celebrity Boxing, recently revealed that Spinks and Douglas will go toe-to-toe in the first-ever AI fight in promotional history.
“Buster Douglas vs. Michael Spinks it is official!!! This summer!!!” Feldman wrote on social media. “Watch on America Nu Network. The first man to beat and knock out Mike Tyson, James ‘Buster’ Douglas, takes on former heavyweight champ Michael Spinks in the first-ever ‘AI’ Celebrity Boxing match this summer!!!”
What exactly does that mean? Nobody really knows, but more information is still to come as the 67-year-old Spinks attempts to turn back the clock for a digital clash with ‘Buster’ Douglas, 64, a man best known for delivering one of the greatest upsets in sports history.
Riding a six-fight win streak, Douglas stepped inside the ring on February 11, 1990, for a showdown with the baddest man on the planet, unified heavyweight world champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. Pundits expected Tyson to make quick work of Douglas, bagging his 10th successful defense. Instead, ‘Buster’ shocked the world, becoming the first man to both beat and knock out Tyson to win the WBA, WBC, and IBF heavyweight titles.
To this day, ‘Buster’ Douglas’ 10th-round TKO of Tyson sits as one of the most iconic moments in boxing history.
Competing from 1977 to 1988, Michael Spinks is also a former unified heavyweight world champion with 13 total title defenses in his 32 career fights. He is best known for his back-to-back victories against Larry Holmes and only suffered one defeat in his career, falling to Mike Tyson in what would be the last fight of his career.
