Canelo Alvarez Knocks Down John Ryder Twice on Way to Unanimous Decision – Alvarez vs. Ryder Results (Highlights)

Canelo Alvarez returned to Mexico for the first time in 11 years on Saturday night for an undisputed super middleweight world title fight with British contender John Ryder. Emanating from the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, Alvarez was gunning for his 59th career win while Ryder was looking to score the biggest win of his professional boxing career in enemy territory.

Round 1

Sizing up one another in the opening second, John Ryder fired first with a jab that couldn’t break through the guard of Alvarez. A combination from Ryder doesn’t get through and Alvarez fires back with a rip to the body. Alvarez put the pressure on early, but it was Ryder who went on the attack, throwing combinations and pushing Alvarez against the ropes, working the body of his opponent. Alvarez pumps the jab and uncorks a big overhand right that partially lands. Alvarez continues working his jab, backing Ryder into the corner as the first round ends.

Round 2

Round two saw Canelo Alvarez continuing to establish his jab. 1-2 from Ryder prompts Alvarez to counter with a left, but the champ eats a right hand from Ryder in return. Jab from Alvarez gets through. Another 1-2 from Ryder. Alvarez throws a left hook that Ryder easily avoids. Back-to-back jabs from Alvarez. Ryder responds with a left to the body. Left -right from Ryder. Alvarez throws an uppercut to the body, but comes up just short as the round comes to a close. 

Round 3

After pacing themselves in the second, both fighters come out swinging with Alvarez throws a big uppercut that partially lands. He backs Ryder to the ropes and unloads a combination. Ryder is eating strikes as he gets pushed against the ropes and is now showing significant damage with blood streaming from his face. Ryder does not appear to have an answer for the barrage of strikes that Alvarez is delivering. Ryder moves in close and lands a short uppercut. Ryder continues firing back as Alvarez stalks him, but the champ is clearly in control through the end of the third.

Round 4

Canelo Alvarez comes out targeting the body before going back to his jab. Alvarez fires a vicious uppercut, but misses the mark. Alvarez follows up with a left that lands followed by a straight right that snaps back Ryder’s head. Ryder circles out as he gets backed against the ropes and continues targeting the body. Alvarez rips to the body as he backs Ryder to the corner. Ryder clinches and separates. Alvarez throws a couple of jabs that land just before the fourth round bell sounds.

Round 5

Ryder picked up his pace in the early going of round five, firing off a series of combinations just as he did in the first round. Ryder stays in close and continues working the body while Alvarez goes upstairs where his jab has been getting the job done all night. Straight right from Alvarez lands followed by a left. Alvarez uncorks a right hand that puts Ryder on the canvas. Ryder answers the 10-count and the fight continues. Ryder becomes a bit more aggressive, but is unable to land anything significant. Big right hook from Alvarez partially lands. Both fighters stand toe-to-toe as the round ends.

Round 6

Ryder comes out landing to the body. He follows it up with a solid uppercut that gets through. Big combination from Ryder. Alvarez comes back with a massive right hand that stumbles Ryder. There is a very clear power discrepancy between the two fighters as Alvarez continues to absorb Ryder’s potshots. Alvarez continues moving forward, looking to land a big right hand and end things. Uppercut from Alvarez lands to the body of Ryder moments before the end of the round. 

Round 7

Ryder attempted to work the jab as Alvarez continued to close the distance. Right hook to the body from Ryder and Alvarez attempts to return fire. Short uppercut from Alvarez lands as Ryder throws a combination of strikes in response. Jabs from Alvarez continue to pile up, but Ryder delivers one of his own that snaps back Alvarez’s head. They tee off on one another with neither man gaining a clear advantage in the exchange. Dual jabs from Alvarez land. Alvarez fires another big right hand, but Ryder sees it coming and gets out of danger through the end of the round. 

Round 8

Canelo Alvarez puts on the pressure, targeting the body before pressuring Ryder into the corner and throwing a solid combination of strikes. Right hook from Alvarez followed by back-to-back jabs from Alvarez. The champ is beginning to pick his shots at this point, relying on his jab while looking to land his looping right hand. 1-2 from Alvarez and Ryder responds with a right hook that’s blocked. Right hand from Alvarez glances off Ryder’s head. 1-2 from Ryder and Alvarez unloads a 1-2 of his own that drops Ryder for the second time as the eighth round ends. 

Round 9

Ryder targets the body as Alvarez goes upstairs landing another right hook. Alvarez goes to the body with a left followed by another big right hand that partially lands. Ryder continues going after the body, but is unable to answer the onslaught of right hands that Alvarez is unloading on him. Right hand by Alvarez lands followed by another. Ryder attempts to respond, but eats an uppercut that wobbles him. Ryder is in trouble as Alvarez begins to smell blood in the water. Ryder continues firing back, but he is a blood mess as the round ends. 

Round 10

Canelo Alvarez comes out aggressive in the tenth round. Ryder can only continue to work the body while Alvarez keeps hunting for the right hand that will put his opponent away. Solid straight right from Ryder followed by a 1-2 lands. Right hook from Ryder. Both men continued to trade strikes as Alvarez began to show signs of slowing down. Left hand from Alvarez misses, but he lands another big right that lands on the button of Ryder before the round ends.

Round 11

Ryder fires off a series of short strikes as Alvarez responds with a big 1-2. Things remain competitive with Ryder refusing to back down. Volume at this point is in favor of Ryder, but Alvarez is landing the more significant shots during the right, leaning on his right hook. Straight right from Alvarez gets through. Ryder responds with a straight of his own. Alvarez once again throws a right and Ryder opts not to respond as the bell sounds. 

Round 12

Both fighters touch gloves to start the third round and Ryder immediately begins to unload, likely realizing that he has to knock out Alvarez in order to win. Alvarez comes back with a right. Two rights from Ryder followed by a rip to the body from Alvarez. Ryder closes in and Alvarez unloads a 1-2. Straight right by Ryder followed by a check left. Alvarez is breathing heavy as Ryder continues firing strikes. Right from Alvarez partially lands. Ryder backs Alvarez against the ropes and goes to the body. With ten seconds to go, Ryder attempts to land a couple more shots, but nothing breaks the guard of Alvarez.
