A pivotal middleweight bout between Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier takes place in the co-main event of UFC 254.

Round 1

Cannonier opens up with a strong leg kick. Whittaker responds with a leg kick of his own. Whittaker lands another but receives one from Cannonier that momentarily drops him. Whittaker partially lands a couple of body kicks. Cannonier continues to be aggressive with the leg kicks. Whittaker just about misses a head kick from his patented combination. Whittaker jabs Cannonier as he attempts another leg kick. Whittaker continues employing a jab as he looks to load up a big right hand. However, Cannonier’s guard is protecting him. Cannonier lands a nice body kick and follows it up with a leg kick as the round comes to an end.

I score that for Whittaker. 10-9.

Round 2

The pair return to striking and Cannonier continues with the leg kicks to begin the second round. Whittaker is landing more strikes but Cannonier’s leg kick damage is adding up. Whittaker continues to jab and throw rights but is yet to land a clean strike that hurts Cannonier this round. Cannonier’s right eye is seemingly starting to shut thanks in part to Whittaker’s constant jabbing. Cannonier lands a huge leg kick. Whittaker clinches up with Cannonier and takes him down. However, Cannonier gets to his feet pretty quickly. Cannonier is more aggressive with his punches and kicks in the final minute of this round. Whittaker lands a nice straight right that connects. Whittaker follows it up with a double jab and right hand that connects.

Close round but I give it to Whittaker again. 20-18.

Round 3

Whittaker resumes things with his stinging jab as Cannonier seems to have no answer for it. Whittaker connects with his head kick combination that wobbles Cannonier. Cannonier falls to the ground and now has Whittaker on top of him who looks to land ground and pound. Whittaker transitions from half guard to full guard before taking Cannonier’s back. Cannonier escapes and gets up to his feet with Whittaker clinched up against the fence. Cannonier lands knees to Whittaker’s left leg. They separate and return to striking. Cannonier partially lands a head kick but Whittaker is unaffected. Whittaker continues with his jabbing. Cannonier lands a body kick before hurting Whittaker with a right hand. Cannonier is unloading the pressure but Whittaker level changes and clinches him against the fence as the fight ends.

Clear round for Whittaker. 30-27 in my book.

Official result: Whittaker defeats Cannonier via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
