UFC featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski took issue with Colby Covington’s personal digs at Leon Edwards before UFC 296.
Ahead of the welterweight title clash between champion Edwards and Covington, “Chaos” was heavily criticized by fans and reporters for taking a nasty verbal swipe at “Rocky.” Covington mentioned dragging Edwards to hell, and said that’s where he can reunite with his late father. Edwards hurled a bottle at Covington in response.
When the two shared the Octagon, Covington lacked the pressure game he’s been known for, and really couldn’t get much going against Leon until late in the final round when it was clearly not going to be enough to sway the judges. Edwards retained his gold via unanimous decision and was quite emotional over Covington’s comments during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.
Alex Volkanovski Slams Colby Covington For Comments On Leon Edwards’ Father
Alex Volkanovski has released a new video on his YouTube channel reacting to UFC 296. During the video, “The Great” went off on Colby Covington for his words on Leon Edwards’ late father.
“Obviously, most of us were rooting for Leon, or I know I was, especially after Colby’s comments” Volkanovski said. “Colby said quite a few things that just annoyed me. I know a lot are gonna try to say it’s a character. There’s nothing wrong with playing a character. It is a part of the game, but there is things that you just don’t say and things that you don’t want to go near, and if someone tries to use that and act like that’s a character, uh-uh. All that goes out the window, shows you how much of a sh*t human being you are, and that just showed me how much of a piece of beep Colby Covington was.”
Volkanovski went on to praise Edwards for not letting his emotions get the best of him in the fight.
“He knew that, ‘Alright, I can’t let myself get emotional,’ he just went, ‘Uh-uh, I’m just gonna stick exactly to the game plan,’ Volkanovski continued. “He maybe could’ve done a little bit more, but he goes, ‘Uh-uh, I ain’t giving this bloke a chance. I ain’t gonna fall for anything,’ and then even started getting takedowns of his own.”
