Chael Sonnen would be willing to bet on Jon Jones, no matter the combat sport or even the opponent.
From coaching a season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ together to fighting Jones in 2013, the former UFC title challenger hasn’t always seen eye-to-eye with Jones. But, what Sonnen has seen from Jones is that he’s very skilled in just about wherever the fight goes and isn’t afraid of a good challenge.
‘I Would Bet On Jon Jones In Anything’
Another former foe of Jones, Anthony Smith, had something to say about the game of ‘Bones‘. He’d say it’s not about his individual skill set but more so how he blends it together. Sonnen would follow up on the topic, citing he’d be willing to put his money on Jones’ individual skills— even against top stars of other combat sports.
“I would bet on Jon Jones in anything,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “I might lose my money, but I would bet on Jon Jones in anything. I’m gonna disgust you guys, but I don’t say this with any exaggeration. If Jon Jones was entering Abu Dhabi tomorrow, and Gordon Ryan was in the bracket, I’ll bet on Jon Jones. Roast away, go ahead. If Jon Jones is going to go over to heavyweight boxing and take on Tyson Fury, I’m gonna bet on Jon Jones…”
“Jon Jones drives me nuts. Jon Jones drives me crazy. I would never deny what I’m seeing, though. When I say I’d bet on Jon in anything: Jon did a no-gi grappling match against a two-time Olympian named Dan Henderson. The fun and the playfulness that Jon had in it while being dominant, it stayed with me.”
Retelling another story, Sonnen also said Jones played with and submitted a BJJ brown belt easily while doing an autograph signing. With this happening out of the blue for ‘Bones’, this is one of the reasons uncle Chael is so confident in Jones as a competitor.
When It Comes To Combat, Chael Is Taking Jon
Sonnen would continue in his hot take on Jones.
“When it comes to combat, whether I like him or not… I get Anthony (Smith’s) point. I know what Anthony’s saying. Me telling you Jon can beat up Tyson Fury in boxing, I better be prepared to lose my money. Me telling you Jon could win in Abu Dhabi in the bracket, I better have that money because I’m probably gonna hand it over. I’m telling you now, if Jon Jones is doing it and it’s combat, I’m taking Jon.”
