Poirier Thinks Tony Deserves A Title Shot “Without A Doubt”

Dustin Poirier has a tall task ahead at UFC 242 against Khabib Nurmagomedov. It’s documented that Dustin has total confidence that he will get past Khabib. If he is able to secure that victory, Poirier already knows who he wants to face next; Tony Ferguson.

Poirier spoke during the UFC’s conference call leading up to the event.

“One hundred percent it’s Tony Ferguson without a second guess,” said Poirier during the call.“Without any bargaining, it’s Tony Ferguson. No doubt.” via MMAFighting

Poirier’s logic in choosing Ferguson makes a lot of sense

After all, Ferguson is the former Interim UFC Lightweight champion. A title that he actually never lost. An odd injury suffered during the promotion leading up to a Ferguson vs Khabib bout was actually what sidelined Tony.

By the time Ferguson made a recovery, Khabib was already booked against Conor McGregor for UFC 229, the same card Ferguson made his return. He took on Anthony Pettis and finished him in the second round of the fight.

Ferguson then went on to defeat “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. Both performances earned Tony fight of the night rewards. Ferguson is currently on a 12 fight win streak which is unheard of in the modern era of the UFC. It makes perfect sense why Poirier thinks Tony should be next in line.

Dustin Still Remains Focused Ahead

Although Poirier could see himself talking on Tony next, he made it clear that Khabib is no easy task. He also expressed that without currently holding the title, he’s in no position to pick his next opponent.

“Honestly, I don’t think about that type of stuff, because Khabib is all I can focus on right now,” said Dustin on the call. “I can’t disrespect the work that needs to be done September 7th”

If Poirier is able to defeat Khabib, let’s see if he will keep his word. While Tony deserves to be next, Conor McGregor has been on a path to redemption. Part of that redemption includes re-securing the UFC lightweight championship. Poirier vs McGregor would do wonders for Dustin’s bank account, but for now, Poirier feels certain that Tony Ferguson deserves to be next.
