Mike Perry was disappointed with the fights at UFC 296.
Perry attended the final UFC card of the year from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday. In the main event, Leon Edwards took on Colby Covington for the welterweight title, which he won by a lopsided decision.
In the lead-up to the fight, Covington took a shot at Edwards’ late father which Mike Perry believes was to try and get the Brit to fight emotionally. However, even though Edwards cruised to a decision win, Perry says he still was disappointed in the final round, as he says that showed a weakness in the champ’s game.
Mike Perry explains how UFC 296 showed a flaw in Leon Edwards’ game
“I thought the fights wee (boring), just watching people lay on the ground all night. Gosh, where is the fight? It wasn’t very exciting, Karate Combat was very exciting the other night, with lots of knockouts, lots of scraps, and people battling it out. In the main event, in my opinion, Leon fought smart as he always does, I don’t know of anyone who can outsmart him in there. Yes, Colby said what he said to try and get Leon to be more reckless in my opinion, so he wouldn’t fight as smart and actually go for broke and that isn’t what we saw,” Mike Perry said to The Schmo.
“We saw Colby be so like, he didn’t do anything, he didn’t try and then you know, I’m a little, I’m like, damn bro, how do you give this guy the last two minutes of the fight? Like, Leon got caught up in a bad position at the end, Colby was on top and he just held that position. You let that guy sit on top of you for the last two minutes? Yes, Leon won every moment of the fight, in my opinion, until the last two minutes, which was stupid and, you know, respect to the champ but all the fights were boring,” Perry continued.
Although Colby Covington was able to control Leon Edwards in the final round, the Brit still dominated the fight and got the win. However, Mike Perry believes Covington showing how easy it was to control Edwards is something the champ will need to work on.
