UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping thinks Jon Jones would be in for a rude awakening against the newly-minted interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.
Jones is the main UFC titleholder at heavyweight. He was scheduled to put his gold on the line against Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 295, but “Bones” tore a pectoral tendon while preparing for the fight. As a result, the bout was postponed and Aspinall took on Sergei Pavlovich for the interim gold. Aspinall knocked Pavlovich out in the first round.
Michael Bisping Has Grim Outlook For Jon Jones In Potential Tom Aspinall Fight
During a UFC 295 recap edition of the “Believe You Me” podcast, Michael Bisping implied that people will accuse Jon Jones of ducking Tom Aspinall if he defeats Stipe Miocic and then retires.
“The perfect plan for Jon Jones would be go to heavyweight, become the champion, beat Stipe who’s the greatest heavyweight, and then beat the number one contender, or now as we have an interim champion,” Bisping said.” I think if Jon doesn’t fight Tom Aspinall and he retires, we know what everyone’s gonna say. I don’t even need to say it. So, Jones I think his back’s up against the wall, if he beats Stipe, of course.”
Ultimately, Bisping doesn’t think Jones, who is widely considered to be the greatest mixed martial arts athlete to grace the cage, has a chance against Tom Aspinall.
“It’s never gonna happen, I’m sorry,” Bisping said. “I love Jon Jones, I think he’s incredible. If you look at it on paper, Jones has never been a knockout artist. He takes people down, he wears them down, he has master game plans, the fight IQ is through the roof. Taking Tom down? I don’t know. He’s a great wrestler, he probably could. He took DC down a couple of times. I think Tom could get back to the feet, but on the feet I think Tom takes his head off.”
