Leon Edwards wouldn’t be surprised if the UFC wants him to lose his welterweight gold to Colby Covington.

Edwards’ 170-pound gold will be at stake he when he takes on Covington in the UFC 296 headliner. They will share the Octagon inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for the UFC’s final event of 2023. “Rocky” is making his second UFC title defense, while this is Covington’s third chance at undisputed gold.

Leon Edwards Feels Like An Underdog Against Colby Covington

During an appearance on “The MMA Hour,” Leon Edwards admitted that he feels the UFC brass is backing Colby Covington to defeat him, but he’s taking everything in stride.

“They brought him in, in March to weigh in, random, I don’t know why,” Edwards said. “He got Dana White privilege, and that’s it. He hasn’t earned it, he fought Masvidal. Everyone he’s beaten in the last five years is all retired. They all been feeding him like this. He just, for some reason got this mentality where he feels like he deserves more than what he earned, and for some reason, the UFC is going with it and here we are. I’m prepared, I’m ready.”

“Rocky” doubled down when asked if he believes the UFC wants “Chaos” to emerge victorious to close out 2023.

“Probably,” Edwards admitted. “I think Trump wants him to win [laughs]. I think my whole career has been like the underdog going against the favorite, and I think this is no different.”

Edwards last competed back in March of this year, defeating Kamaru Usman via majority decision in their trilogy fight. As for Covington, he hasn’t fought since March 2022. He scored a unanimous decision victory over Jorge Masvidal, who is currently retired.
