The UFC is targeting London for the title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington on July 22.
Any questions that remained regarding UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards were put to rest in London last month. Edwards came to rule the welterweight division after a shocking fifth-round head kick over Kamaru Usman at UFC 278. Edwards turned around and defeated Usman once again at UFC 286 in his hometown of London.
Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington is targeted for July 22 in London
Immediately following his win over Usman, Edwards was already matched up with his next opponent. UFC president Dana White had called in title contender Colby Covington to act as a backup for the main event at the O2. Following the fight, he announced that Covington would be next for the champ. At that time Edwards was not too happy about this.
Covington has not fought since March 2022. Despite this fact and two wins in his last four, he is getting the next title shot. Edwards was hoping that UFC would match him up with Jorge Masvidal. There is some history between the two of them, some bad blood, plus Masvidal is one of the biggest names in the UFC. This would be a much bigger fight and probably would sell a lot more pay-per-views than that with Covington, he believes.
However, the UFC seems set on planning the bout with Covington and riding the fanfare of Edwards in London. Also, a possibility on that card would be the return of Tom Aspinall, who has been sidelined with an injury and has been looking for a return later this year.
