The tweet indicated that the pair facing each other was in the works for UFC 245 in Las Vegas. The card is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena.
Robbie’s Recent Troubles
“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler is coming off of a tough three-fight losing streak. Falling short against Colby Covington, Ben Askren, and Rafael Dos Anjos, Lawler will look to get back into the win column for the first time since 2017.
Despite the three consecutive losses, Lawler still remains #13 in the UFC welterweight rankings. Suffering a loss to Ponzinibbio could very well take him out of title contention in the very competitive division for the remainder of the time on his UFC contract.
Santiago Looks to Continue Win Streak
On the other hand, Ponzinibbio is riding a seven-fight win streak dating back to 2015. The streak includes a devastating KO victory over #15 ranked Neil Magny. Santiago’s recent injuries have kept him from rising up in the welterweight rankings. As of now, he is sitting at the number 8 spot, 5 slots higher than Lawler.
Defeating Robbie Lawler would give Ponzinibbio a victory over a proven veteran. Additionally, if the victory is impressive enough, it could propel him into the top 5 of one of the most competitive divisions in all of the UFC.
UFC 245 Filled With Swirling Rumors
Recently, Conor McGregor sent a cryptic tweet including the day of the card. The addition of Robbie Lawler vs Santiago Ponzinibbio makes UFC 245 a solid card. But, adding a proven draw like McGregor could skyrocket the card to a million pay per view buys. Whether Conor joins in on the action or not, UFC 245 is shaping up to be a fun card filled with action-packed fights.
