The Korean Zombie, real name Chan Sung Jung, made what could be the final walk of his combat sports career at UFC Singapore on Saturday.
After taking one some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, including Dustin Poirier, Jose Aldo, and Alexander Volkanovski, TKZ added another name to his resume, stepping inside the Octagon for a fight with featherweight legend and former world champion, Max Holloway.
Round 1
Korean Zombie comes out firing a calf kick. Holloway responds with a low kick of his own. Zombie looks to put some pressure on Holloway early as ‘Blessed’ lands another low kick. Calf kick from Zombie lands followed by a nice left hook from the South Korean. Big right hand from Zombie lands and Holloway responds with a shot of his own that rocks Zombie. Holloway pushes TKZ to the fence. Zombie is loading up on his shots, looking for the big highlight-reel knockout.
Both fighters trade low kicks. Holloway with a combination that backs up Zombie briefly. A straight right to the body of Zombie lands for Holloway. Zombie throws a looping right hand that misses the mark. 1-2 from Hollway lands. ‘Blessed’ goes to the body with a kick. Zombie appears to shoot in for a takedown briefly but is unable to close the distance. Zombie moves in with a big right that lands on Holloway. A low kick from TKZ lands. The first round ends with Zombie throwing a big three-punch combo, landing a right on Holloway’s chin.
Round 2
Korean Zombie comes out feinting the takedown and lands a left hook. Holloway responds with a big right hand that drops TKZ. Holloway hesitates, thinking the fight is over. The referee lets the fight go, prompting Holloway to jump on Zombie and lock in an anaconda choke. Zombie survives the hold, climbs back to his feet, and clinches up with Holloway against the fence before separating.
Zombie throws a big left hand that lands. Zombie appears to be fully recovered. Holloway closes the distance and throws a series of strikes that partially land. A left from TKZ glances off Holloway. Another left from Zombie lands and Holloway eats it. Straight right from Holloway lands. Zombie snaps back with a right of his own. A head kick from Holloway grazes off the back of Zombie’s head. TKZ loads up on his patented uppercut but narrowly misses.
Holloway targets the body of Zombie before going back upstairs. A body kick from Holloway lands. Zombie throws a jab and Holloway responds with a spin heel kick to the abdomen moments before the second round horn sounds.
Round 3
Zombie comes out unloading on Holloway and both men are beginning to empty their tanks with a frenzy of strikes. Throwing caution to the win ends up being the Zombie’s undoing as Holloway lands a vicious right hand, sending TKZ crashing to the canvas face first. Referee Marc Goddard immediately steps in and calls for the stoppage in the opening moments of the third round.
