  • “The Nigerian Nightmare” thinks “Notorious” will not become a champion again

Kamaru Usman got brutally honest about how he sees Conor McGregor’s trajectory as the UFC’s biggest star and he thinks “Notorious” no longer has the drive to become the best in the world.

Conor is not hungry for success

Speaking on Valuetainment, “The Nigerian Nightmare” weighed in on McGregor’s career after a long period of inactivity. According to Usman, he didn’t want to judge but looking at McGregor’s life right now, he is certain the former UFC two-division champ is not motivated to conquer the UFC anymore and hence, wouldn’t be a champion again.

“For Conor, I do think he’ll make a comeback. He might win fights here and there, but I just don’t see him becoming a champion again because it’s a different mindset to be there. And it’s very, very tough to plug in to that,” Usman speculated. “… So that decision to plug back in to be able to get back up there, that’s very difficult to do when you don’t have those you know, you’re not hungry.”

Conor is not the only star anymore

Usman also pointed out that the MMA world did not stop when McGregor got injured. In fact, Usman said there has been a wide array of elite fighters looking to take over the sport at present.

For “The Nigerian Nightmare,” those fighters have been progressing better and faster than McGregor at this point.

“The world is catching up because everyone there’s guys that are looking up to that position and they’re coming up they’re still moving but now, your progression is not as fast as it was. It’s slowly starting to dim now. So they’re [other elite fighters] starting to catch up a little bit,” Usman added.

McGregor has not fought professionally since UFC 264 in 2021. He was expected to face Michael Chandler in the finale of TUF 31 but everything was botched along with the UFC’s partnership with USADA.

As it stands, Chandler said he is positive about fighting McGregor in the first quarter of 2024.
