Jorge Masvidal knows the fans want to see him fight for the title.
The UFC welterweight division is one of the most stacked in all of the UFC. With a new champion at the helm the top contenders are all lining up to wait for their shot. It seems that champ Leon Edwards will have his hands full with a rematch in his next outing as he takes on Kamaru Usman next year but that doesn’t stop the fans from calling for other options.
One of the biggest names in the division is Jorge Masvidal. He is a former title challenger and despite a string of losses he still believes he is the most intriguing fight for the new champion. Masvidal has lost three in a row but has some history with Edwards. It is because of this history he feels fans want to see a fight between them, even if some have been vocal against it.
“For starters, everybody has an opinion and everybody’s entitled to so if people think I deserve it or not awesome and I don’t take nothing to heart. I definitely feel I deserve it. I definitely seen, just from the money side we definitely deserve it. Just from the fan side we definitely, who doesn’t want to see me fight Leon?: he said to Mike Heck from MMA Fighting.com .“They might say I don’t deserve it, but they would still raise your hands in the dark and quiet and be like, I want to see that fight and I’m actually gonna pay my hard-earned money to go see that fight.”
Jorge Masvidal is counting on his history with Edwards to fuel a fight
Masvidal and Edwards were involved in a scuffle back in 2019 following Masvidal’s win in London. Later the two were matched up in 2021 but at the time Masvidal was forced to withdraw due to injury. The fight was never rescheduled and Edwards went on to win the title. Now that Edwards Is in position of the belt, Masvidal wants to reschedule the fight, Edwards is not as eager.
“It’s a fight world you know, it was a story, this has a fucking movie between me and what’s his face and f–king English fuck, you know? So why not give the fans what they want? You know? If I didn’t deserve it, or fans didn’t want to watch every time I talked to a reporter anybody they’re always just talking about this. Why is he talking about something else? They’re always talking about me against Leon in England. Leon f–king step up to the plate bro. You begged and cried and did all this bullsh-t before when I was fighting for the titles now you got the bell? Let’s go and I never dodged this f-ck because when I wasn’t fighting Leon, I was fighting the guy that had the belt.”
It seems that Masvidal may need to take on another fight in the meantime and try to get a win under his belt. Edwards has mentioned being in no rush to face him and might take some pleasure in making Masvidal wait.
