Leon Edwards thinks Kamaru Usman is acting weird following his loss.

Leon Edwards is riding high off his first UFC title win. He shocked the world when he landed a head kick on the reigning champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 two weeks ago. Now Edwards finds himself at the top of the UFC welterweight division looking down. He has not found himself too much in the spotlight just yet and to those on the outside looking in, it may seem as if the majority of the media attention is still on Usman.

Following the loss, which was only the second of his career, Usman has been seen taking it in stride. He was in good spirits immediately after UFC 278 and continues to be happy in defeat. He is confident that he will get a rematch and even called it a relief to have lost. To Edwards who worked long and hard to win the UFC title, Usman’s reaction seems a bit off. He spoke to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting about this.

“I don’t believe it, it’s weird right?” Edwards said of Usman’s reaction to the loss. “To go from this cocky guy to now happy to get knocked out and it’s a relief? I just don’t believe it. For me and hope as I said, I never got to a stage where I’m happy for a loss you know? and yeah, it’s weird, the way he’s handling it like the only way he could handle it. He couldn’t come out and be like, salty. I think he’s handling it the only way he could handle it. You know, so we’ll see. I don’t know it’s weird. I haven’t watched much of him since, I started the Joe Rogan thing yesterday, like clips of it, not a full interview, it’s weird. I feel like he’s overdoing it. You know, like, he was the champion. He fought and he couldn’t be beat. Now you’ve been beat. That’s the game.”

Now that Edwards is the champion, he can begin to look forward to his first title defense. Although there have been talks of a trilogy fight with Usman right away, there are others looming. One man who could be slipping in with a win this weekend is Khamzat Chimeav. He has been doing well and is inching towards a title shot. Another fight wanting his shot is Jorge Masvidal.

Leon Edwards finds it funny that Jorge Masvidal has been avoiding him but now wants a title shot

Masvidal and Edwards were supposed to fight back in December, but that fight never went through. After the cancellation, Masvidal took a fight with Colby Convington instead and threw Edwards to the curb. Now he would like that fight back and has been calling Edwards’ name. Edwards finds it funny that before he won that title Masvidal was not interested but now that he is holding the belt things have suddenly changed.

“Yeah 100%, I remember when the fight with me and him and it got canceled and he was like I’m not worried about you now you have to go to the back of the line,” he explained. “But now he is like begging, saying, I’ll for you London, mate I’ve been calling you out for three years and you went running and went hiding and I haven’t heard or seen you in however long it was been, three years, but now it feels good to be the king and now I’m on top, you know, like little Leon came in, slid in there, head kicked him and slid out so it’s perfect.”

Whatever is next for the new champion, Edwards is enjoying being at the top. He seems happy to face any and all comers especially if the fight can be in his home country of England. Only time will tell which contender will get the opportunity to fight “Rocky” next.
